Find Your Niche

It doesn’t matter how large a following you have or how many social media platforms you use, finding a niche is an important step in building your brand, cultivating a loyal following, and monetizing your channels through affiliate marketing.

If you think about the most successful creators, they are all known for something specific and that gives them an air of expertise. When you think of Alexa Chung, you think fashion. When you think of Salt Bae, you think food. When you think of Huda Kattan, you think beauty. Nadia? Gaming. Khaby Lame? Comedy. The list goes on…

There are also Creators that have cross-over appeal based on their image and status. For example, LeBron James might be known for playing basketball and he’s an authority on fitness and fitness apparel, but he also works with many other brands in many other niches (soft drinks, cell phone carriers, and car companies ). Charli D’Amelio started out with dancing and choreography videos and has used her popularity on TikTok to transition into other niches (clothing, skincare, and even hummus). But before either of them could expand their influence, they had to master one niche first.

Maybe you haven’t found your niche yet or perhaps you are looking to transition from one niche to another. Wherever you are on your creator journey, finding your niche will help you focus your posting efforts and shape your brand.

According to Instagram, the most popular niche on their platform in 2022 was traveling. Beauty, fashion, health/fitness, and lifestyle round out the top five.

When people think about you, what niche do you want them to associate you with? What do you want to be known for and how do you choose the right one?

What do you do well?

Think about your skills or traits that might translate into a niche. Do you know how to put an outfit together? Do you work out? Were you always the person friends asked to braid or style their hair? Are you really good at gaming? Are you always making your friends laugh? Is there one thing you really excel at? Your followers want to be entertained but they also want to learn something new about you and from you. What niche do you know well enough to be both an entertainer and a teacher?

What interests you?

If you are interested in a particular niche, you are more likely to explore it in interesting ways. Do you like the outdoors? Then travel might be a good niche for you. Are you obsessed with designing your own clothing? Fashion would be an obvious choice then.

You can even approach a new niche as a novice with the right amount of curiosity or doubt. You may not know anything about fitness, but if you approach it with curiosity and share your journey with your followers, you could transition into that niche.

What does your audience like?

If you feel like you could excel at multiple niches or don’t want to define yourself in that way, you can always look to your followers for inspiration. What do they comment about on your posts? Do they like some posts more than others? Bringing your personality and point of view to a variety of niches is actually its own niche.

What about the competition?

Are you worried about entering an already crowded niche? Don’t let that stop you. Celebrate what makes you unique. Bring your own specific point of view to the niche and don’t obsess over being number one. Your following will grow if you are authentic and entertaining.

Don’t let finding your niche stress you out. Use your ability as a Creator to help guide you and be true to who you are. As long as you are honest with yourself and do some basic research, you will end up in the right place.
