Star Wars dominated the box office this weekend, raking in over $238M in ticket sales and displacing Jurassic World as the record holder for Biggest Opening Weekend in North America. Not only did the movie make waves on the big screen but also across social. Now more than ever, fans are taking to social platforms like Instagram, YouTube, Facebook and Twitter to share their movie-going experience and engage with fellow fans. Whether it’s posting a photo while waiting in the daunting opening night lines or engaging with posts from big brands and celebrities, it’s clear #theforceawakens made an impact.
We saw over 80M likes and comments related to the film and about 1/3 of all posts were made over the opening weekend. We compared this to the Jurassic World premiere — there was significantly more engagement across Instagram for Star Wars vs Jurassic World…over 5X.
